AD Hoc Art at the New Puppy in Los Angeles

AD HOC ART GATHERS 34 INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS TO EXPLORE DREAMS, NIGHTMARES, SUPERSTITIONS, AND EXISTENCE TO YEILD CREATIONS RANGING FROM THE PAINFULLY REAL TO THE ETHEREAL FANTASTIC.

-- An Art Exhibit Celebrating the Expansiveness of Consciousness & Culture --

WHEN: Exhibition Opens Friday, May 13th, 7-11pm
with an additional Artwalk Opening: Saturday, May 14th, 7-11pm
Through June 18th, 2011. Hours: 12-6pm Thursday – Saturday and by appointment.

WHAT: AD HOC ART presents “I have a dream, I have a nightmare: Friday the 13th”, an eclectic and electric charge of vast creativity, synapses, and neural networks seeping into Los Angeles’ artmind via New Puppy LA.

That we are living in very fascinating and unprecedented times on the cusp of something is crystal clear. What that “something” is, exactly, is not. What waits on the other side? Is it beautiful or horrendous, sustainable or cataclysmic, truthful or deceptive, just or fraudulent? We all play a leading role in guiding the future of this sweet unraveling already well underway.

Around the world, energies are coming together, people are relating, and the future is so bright. Is the light from the billions of shining smiles of a humane and democratic existence that sustains life; or is it the glistening blast from a bomb dropped by the sociopathic ceo/politico at MegaGlobalBankCorp determined to take all or nothing at our expense?

To divine an answer, dreams, nightmares and Friday the 13th energies have been harnessed, channeled and will be unleashed this 13th of May in the City of Angels. Enjoy these visual nuggets swimming through the realms of spacetime.

Artists include: Alison Buxton, Beau Stanton, Bill Fick, Broken Crow, Bunnie Reiss, Chor Boogie, Chris Stain, CRASH, Dabs & Myla, Daryll Peirce, David Loewenstein, Don Leicht, Ezra Li Eismont, Garrison Buxton, Hellbent, Joe Iurato, John Breiner, John Carr, John Fekner, Jordan Seiler, Know Hope, Lady Pink, Michael De Feo, Mikal Hameed, Paul Booth, Peat Wollaeger, Ray Cross, Rex Dingler, ROA, Robert Steel, Sean Starwars, TheDirtyFabulous, & Thundercut.

The Front - December 12th, 2009

The Front on St. Claude sends us info about their December Opening

The Front • 4100 St. Claude Avenue • New Orleans, LA 70117 • Saturday - Sunday 12 to 5 pm. www.nolafront.org The Front is an
artist-run collective that focuses on the development of contemporary art in New Orleans through exhibitions and community-based projects.

December 12- January 3
Opening reception: Saturday December 12th, 6-10pm

Roadhouse is a collection of artists from here in New Orleans as well as visiting artist Thomas Riess from Vienna, Austria. The show is made up of paintings and mixed media prints with works from Kathy Rodriguez, Matthew Kirscht, Jeff Rinehart and Natalie Sciortino.

This show highlights the life and work of Maria Lovullo (1961 – 2009). A tremendously talented and prolific artist, this exhibition of past and recent work includes a rich array of paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and footage from her performance pieces. Her most recent body of work will be exhibited for the first time here. Also available at the gallery will be a comprehensive catalog of her life's work.

Born in Buffalo, NY, on June 24, 1961, Maria earned a bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York College at Purchase and a Master of Fine Arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was an exhibiting artist who had worked as a gallery director and a film–set decorator when she moved to Louisiana in 1990. While in Lafayette, she was a director at the Lafayette Art Gallery, a board member of the Artist Alliance, and continued to exhibit her work.

In New Orleans, Ms. LoVullo was the print shop director for Young Artists/Young Aspirations, (YA/YA), and an instructor for the Contemporary Arts Center. She led workshops at the children’s “hands–on” tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for many years. In 1999, she taught printmaking to Mid–City children and their parents by having them turn discarded paper products into works of art. “By looking at a specific –a piece of trash– and transforming it into a useful or beautiful thing, the individual builds self–esteem,” she said at the time. “It is also an exercise in responsibility, thoughtfulness and patience.”

In 2002, while teaching in St. Charles Parish, Ms. LoVullo was selected by the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program for a study tour program in Japan. In 2005, after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck, she and her family evacuated to Lafayette, LA, where she helped to create the Talented Arts Program within the Lafayette Parish School System. Upon returning to returning to New Orleans, Ms. LoVullo joined the faculty at Ben Franklin High School and continued to exhibit her work, including her ceramic sculptures in 2008 at The Big Top gallery in New Orleans.

In his essay: "How Little I Know," Buckminster Fuller states that: ... the human brain only waveringly Steers man through constant change. That we are all essential functions of the universe and live in an "exquisite syntropy" of actions and experiences that support as well as undermine each other. Using candies, food and other temporal substances, I've been exploring a slight paraphrase of Fuller's idea in a number of site specific installations each entitled This is All I Know. For the front I have placed on the grounds of the gallery chocolate letters that spell out the phrase. These letters are not meant for human consumption and will eventually dissolve and melt away until only a slight stain is left behind.

Burlesque 101 :: Classes by Bella of Fleur de Tease

As many of y'all know, here at NoLA Rising world headquarters, we like to support all things New Orleans. Dance and theater is no exception. Our city has always had a rich nightlife and one of the more enjoyable outlets that has been thriving again is the burlesque scene.

One such troupe in NoLA is Fleur de Tease and they describe themselves as such:

Fleur de Tease is a premiere Variety Burlesque Revue. This modern twist on a classic vaudeville show has something to please and tease every audience member. Magicians, fire eaters, comedians, aerialists and of course beautiful burlesque dancers all make up the core members of the troupe. Special guest artists such as sword swallowers, singers, and other circus acts make each show a unique and different experience so no two programs are ever the same. Please join us and be prepared to thrill your senses with the lovely burlesque beauties, the comedic cuties, and talented tricksters of Fleur de Tease.

But, how does this burlesque scene develop and how do the girls learn such seductive dance? For women in the city who are interested, where do they go to find out more? A Burlesque 101 class would answer most of those questions...

Every Thursday night at the Crescent Lotus (located at 3143 Calhoun) from 6:30 to 7:30, there are Burlesque classes for every skill level. No need to make a reservation as you can just show up for lessons. However, it's recommended you bring a pair of comfortable heels...pink sunglasses are obligatory...

And if you're unsure of going, on the group's facebook page, Bella says, "Most of the girls in the class have had little or no dance experience! Have no worries."

For more info: Burlesque 101 is designed for anyone and everyone to learn the sexy art of the tease. Class is only $10 per person and promises an amazing adventure into the world of burlesque every time. Call Bella at 504-912-1734 for more info.

MOUTH - The Fundraiser! - We Three Kings

WE THREE KINGS

MOUTH : The Fundraiser - We Three Kings

We Three Kings is a multi-media performance installation in development.

It is inspired by the stories of local artist Joey Bonhage and documented interviews with people rebuilding their homes, businesses and lives in southern Louisiana post-Katrina. It is an examination of New Orleans at this moment in history by visual artists, filmmakers, documentarians, writers and performers that integrates the voices of real people in the community within a narrative folktale about the Mississippi River and its relationship to the people living along it throughout history.

MOUTH is a Fundraiser to support the continuing development of the We Three Kings performance.

The piece has received multiple workshops in New Orleans since Dec 2007 and at the Fusebox Festival in Austin Texas in April of 08.

WHO: We Three Kings, SLIGHTLYAskew, Eurythme, The Skull Club, My Graveyard Jaw & NoLA Rising

WHAT: A Fundraiser & a Production Preview

WITH: Damned Good Food and Drinks Poured by Lord David

WHERE: The Skull Club (1003 N. Spain @ N. Rampart...The Marigny)

WHEN: February, Friday the 13th, 7 p.m. until...

WHY: Because we know how to party and it's to support a project that is rooted in New Orleans lore

AS A SIDENOTE: The creators of We Three Kings have been an invaluable part of getting NoLA Rising to New York where we held a festival showcasing New Orleans themed performance by New Orleans artists and actors. We were able to raise $1,000 for New Orleans Young Audiences. Without their help, we couldn't have brought a piece of the Big Easy to the Big Apple. NoLA Rising will always move forward with projects that showcase the New Orleans artistic spirit and we proudly support We Three Kings in their endeavors!

David's House - NoLA Rising and United for Peace Paint Party - January 10th - Silence is Violence, Let Your Voice be Heard

"Heart of my heart, Love will never die." - "Willow"

Our friends at Silence is Violence have asked for a call to action to make the point that New Orleanians are tired of the inaction when it comes to making our city streets a safer place to enjoy. Here is NoLA Rising's response to Silence is Violence in their call to action: We are surrounded by violence and little seems to be happening to ensure public safety. There are many culprits in why this systemic failure continues to occur and while we'd like to point fingers at all of the particular leaders who day after day do nothing, it would get us no further. In the spirit of NoLA Rising, we plan to take action through art!

NoLA Rising is honored to announce a Paint Party at the house of Susan "Willow" Schroeder, who tragically lost her son to murder in 2001. To lift her out of her grief, she painted a work of love in dedication to her son David, making her home a beautiful expression of the love she felt for him. Sadly, Willow's tale is like so many other New Orleans crime tales, where no one has even been arrested in the shooting death of her son.

The tragedy doesn't end there, however. Willow and her partner Feather, have had to endure discrimination for all of the emotions that have been painted out. One neighbor has tried consistently to have the house cited and actively researches ways to fine them. Quoted in the Times-Picayune, the neighbor questioned: "Does a grieving mother have the right to deface public property because her son died?" because she painted the sidewalk immediately in front of her house. New Orleans is a city that welcomes unique forms of expression and NoLA Rising believes that this is a house worthy of such expression.

Long keeping in the philosophy that "Art can heal the wounded soul!", NoLA Rising sees the individual struggle of a loving mother a perfect place to host a paint party against the senseless acts of violence in New Orleans. It's a way to create something beautiful out of tragedy and I can think of no other way to voice opposition to the lackluster response of those responsible for maintaining public safety. We will also be joined by our friends at United For Peace who will also be creating artwork for a fundraiser to build a center for mothers and families of those lost to tragic violence.

United for Peace will have on hand 15 doors for people to paint their own vision of peace in New Orleans. One door will be given to Willow's family and the rest will be auctioned off at a benefit in March to help Mothers Hurting Because of Violence. Clothing will also be provided by United for Peace for painting and decoration.

Please, honor a fallen son and a fallen brother by joining NoLA Rising and United for Peace at David's House in the 3000 block of St. Peter around noon, Saturday, January 10th (2009) for a paint party. Bring your paints and prepare to make artwork that can proudly be displayed outside of homes across this city. Make artwork that inspires change! Let your voice be heard through artistic expression. Let the leaders of the city know that you will no longer tolerate the scourge of violence that plagues New Orleans. Paint the change you wish to see!

Following the paint party at David's House will be the after-event for the Dinerral Shavers Educational Fund. At Howling Wolf, there'll be a 9 p.m. concert featuring the Hot 8 Brass Band, Soul Rebels, Free Agent Brass Band, The Stooges and a number of other brass bands. Admission is only 10 dollars.

Day 5 - NoLA Rising Festival - Murals and Performance

Dramatic Double Feature. Part one is the four top short plays written by New Orleans high school students in the Recovery Public School District commissioned by the Ogden Museum of Southern Folkart and performed by NYC theater companies The Talking Band, NY-Neo Classical Ensemble, The Movement Theater Company, and IRT. The students will view the staged readings via live webcam down in New Orleans.

Performance at NoLA Rising Festival

The second performance of the day was artist Jennifer Pagan's Shoebox Lounge an admired performance artist and activist in New Orleans, Pagan is bringing her catchy and meaningful show which last appeared in NYC at UCB to IRT. I cannot tell you how touching this piece was to me. Jennifer's piece was so uniquely New Orleans that those of us from down here found ourselves at some point shedding a tear. If you want to talk about someone who knows the soul and spirit of New Orleans, see Jennifer's Shoebox Lounge any and every opportunity you get. Pagan is also a teacher and administrator with Young Audiences.

Earlier in the day, Rex and crew (Avi, Lady Robin, Max-O and super reporter Liz) went out to Brooklyn to bring the mural art of ReX to that neighborhood. It was damned cold, but we were able to accomplish two pieces:

Day Four - NoLA Rising Festival in NYC

Sorry for the delay in getting the updates of the NoLA Rising Festival posted. I've been nursing a cold that I neglected to take care of and it's finally gotten the better of me.

SATURDAY, Nov 22nd, 2008

The day fortunately began late with IRT transformed into a Jazz Cafe. While light Jazz was being performed live in the background, refreshments were served up and painting began...

The afternoon we held two screenings of "Wade in the Water, Children", a documentary by Elizabeth Wood, Gabriel Nussbaum and the Film Class from the first school to re-open after hurricane Katrina in Central City. "Wade in the Water, Children offers a poetic and devastating look at life in New Orleans through the eyes of the kids who call it home." To find out more about the film, visit www.wadeinthewaterdoc.com

Around eight that night, we kicked off all night festivities with WET!, an all night dance party hosted by SLIGHTLYaskew. Featuring the DJs: cassettenova, Eddie Mars & The Vietcong Disco and DJ Theo Action Lorraine.

NoLA Rising couldn't have done it alone. With the help of artists from Endless Love Crew, Robots Will Kill, And Erik Sanner and the support of Slightly Askew, Ad Nauseum Lyceum and IRT, we got an installation together in 24 hours. That's the way to bring two cities together...

Before the music of Suspicious Brown began, two spoken word poets graced us with their work. Thanks to Caitlin Meissner and Eboni Hogan for their works.

Day Two - Over 24 Hours of Paint Time to Prep for the Opening | Endless Love Crew - Robots Will Kill - NoLA Rising

Can I take a Break now?

By the time I got into the space on Thursday, I had just over 24 hours to finish making the space mine. So I did what any decently insane artist would do...put on music and started tuning out people, eating only when food happened to show up, and avoided meaningful banter. In the end, the show was ready with me finishing the walls about an hour before the doors opened...

First Night in NYC Preparing for the NoLA Rising Festival | Photos by Nick Gaswirth

11/19/08

Howdy Folks!

It's been awhile since there's been an update, but as you can imagine, I've needed a little decompression time. I've spent that time organizing over 800 photos, shipping artwork, making phone calls and all the usual post-show craziness. So, to update everyone who would have liked to come up to New York for the NoLA Rising Festival, I'm going to do an event by event post.

Upon landing in New York, I took a taxi direct to IRT where the event was to be held by Slightly Askew for NoLA Rising. Five models awaited my arrival to be painted. I was going with the New Orleans cemetery theme/with Dia de La Muertos faces (as a tribute to our friend Mardi Claw). Everything was going smoothly except that the paint wasn't drying in a manner I was accustomed to. Considering it might be a difference of humidity, I painted on. However, much to our dismay after the photo shoot, Christin came in slightly panicky {approximately 2 a.m.} and announced, "the paint is NOT coming off!"

At that point, I stopped trusting that the base coat had been a latex primer, looked across the room and saw that was indeed not. INDEED not. As I read the words "High Epoxy Medium Enamel", I knew the models were screwed. A few days later, all the paint was off with minimal rashes and I learned a valuable lesson. Had I double checked what paint I had requested, all would be well. Unfortunately the hardware store where the paint was bought decided to rip off the girl who bought it seeing that she didn't know the difference of the paints.

The following photos were taken for NoLA Rising archive purposes, but professional prints of the shoot can be found by photographer Nick Gaswirth. ::: To SEE the photos that Nick Selected, GO HERE

We were given the honor of providing some entertainment at the election party for Barack Obama thrown by our beloved friend DJ Soul Sister. Our sister threw one helluva party with many sponsors (Defend New Orleans among them) and like-minded friends. From Dirty Coast taking pictures of people with Barack cut-out to face-painting by Rex, a good time was had by all.
